Dear Lisa,
I think it's important to point out that Dwight Eisenhower stated that American intervention in Vietnam would be "sheer folly."
Also we should remember that the pretext given by the war mongers was "The Domino Theory" that if Vietnam were to fall to the communist (seen as a monolith) then the whole region would come under Chinese control.
In fact, right after achieving independence, Vistnam fought a border war with China. So much for the Domino Theory that caused so much needless death and suffering.

Being a "child" of the 60's, the war in Vietnam had quite an impact on me and my peers. Seeing our friends and acquaintances going off to war were times of confusion, uncertainty, anger and fear. I think your observations were very compelling and your last paragraph said it all.

Lisa - Have you ever been to the Vietnam Veterans Art Museum in Chicago? It's down around 18th and Indiana and contains the most chilling and compelling art I have ever seen. (And I have been to the Louvre, Smithsonian, Prado, etc) Similar to what you describe here, it is a heavy afternoon to go down there, but it is worth it. Especially now that you have seen the country and gained a whole different perspective on the toll of that war.

PS - To end on a light note - I loved your posts on the bike trip! :)

War is, in fact hell, from every perspective. As similar as they look, no two are ever alike if you really examine them. What they have in common is that they are all bad, justified or not by whoever argues any side. Free will comes with a huge price that too many are willing to pay too often. Nobody is born with the right to destoy other human lives. An educated world is a better one in every way. If we lob more books and less bombs, we'll be better off.
